One of the greatest benefits of reviewing music isn't getting the new Constantines record in the mail; it's receiving a CD from a band that you'd never discover on your own. Perhaps you might stumble upon them when going to see a totally different band, but the chances of that going down are really slim. Say hello to San Francisco's Calling All Monsters. On their debut LP The Traps That Work Best, this seasoned quartet of musicians have fashioned a record that stands on its own accords yet contains familiar bits and pieces of what made the middle 90's the high water mark in the history of college rock. If you are looking for examples, Fugazi, Edsel, and Archers of Loaf are the bands that stand out the most. As for tracks, pay special attention to… well the entire fucking record as you're not going to find too many weak tracks on The Traps That Work Best. If you find yourself reminiscing back to your years in Chapel Hill, Lawrence, Madison, or whatever back road college town you lived in, Calling All Monsters has a record that's going to trigger a nostalgic flashback. The Traps That Work Best is one hell of a record.
